The ZMHS Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), is a program authorized by the National Defense Act of 1916, and Public Law 88-647, 13 October 1964. The original concept of the program was to offer a non-compulsory cadet corps aimed toward making better citizens. Each branch of the military service has established a JROTC program representing the mission, history, traditions, and leadership doctrine of the service to educate high school students.

Students that want to learn to play an instrument should enroll in Beginning Band. Students that have had a year of experience in Beginning Band should enroll in Intermediate Band. Membership in Advanced Band is coordinated with the Band Director. All bands will support ZM/HS community activities in and out of class. Intermediate and Advanced bands will travel to take part in area band and community activities.

Competitive boy's high school games are played throughout the spring sports seasons.  Games are generally on Fridays and Saturdays.  ZMHS also participates in a Far East competition for the Pacific-wide championship title.Term:  springMeeting time...

ZMHS has a highly competitive and respected boys' basketball team. Junior varsity teams sometimes are formed depending on whether or not enough students can be fielded.   The boys' basketball team competes against other DoDEA Pacific-East and Japan Kanto Plains international schools.

The cheerleading team is looking for enthusiastic, dynamic and hardworking students whose primary mission is to represent the school with a spirit of support for other athletic teams, fans and the entire Zama and Atsugi communities. The team performs during the football (fall) and basketball (winter) seasons. The team also participates in the school events like pep rallies, spirit rallies and Far East.

Cross country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. The course, typically 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long, may include surfaces of grass and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel road. It is both an individual and a team sport; runners are judged on individual times and teams by a points-scoring method. Both males and females compete in cross country, which takes place during fall and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.

Culinary Arts Far East
Explore the world through food in our immersive Culinary Arts program, proudly serving the student community of DODEA Pacific East. This hands-on course blends global flavors with foundational culinary techniques, preparing students for careers in hospitality, food service, and beyond. From mastering knife skills and baking fundamentals to exploring international cuisine and nutrition, students gain real-world experience in professional-grade kitchens. With a focus on teamwork, creativity, and cultural appreciation, our program equips future chefs and food entrepreneurs to thrive in any kitchen—whether at home, abroad, or in the industry.

eSports is a competitive team-based interschool video-gaming competition. ZMHS earned 1st place in 2025 in DoDEA Pacific among all schools for its strong and excellent program. It is considered an athletic event although it is non-contact in nature. All team members must meet all sports eligibility requirements.

ZMHS Football team is part of Division 2 for DoDEA Pacific Schools and consistently wins. Feared by DoDEA schools Pacific-wide and by international schools in the Japan Kanto Plains prefecture, the ZMHS Trojan team is not to be trifled with. Games are scheduled on Fridays or Saturdays during the fall season.

FTC is a global robotics competition for high school students. Teams design, build, program, and operate robots to complete unique challenges on a game field. Each year, a new game is released, encouraging creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation. At Zama, our teams will travel to Okinawa for the regional competitions, where they’ll compete alongside teams from mainland Japan, Okinawa, Guam, and Korea. Students not only apply STEM skills but also develop collaboration, leadership, and hands-on engineering experience that prepares them for the real world. The teams start to meet in October and travel together to Okinawa for the final competition in March.

Key Club members around the world are learning how to lead and stand for what’s right through service and volunteerism. In partnership with Kiwanis Club of Japan, high school students are making a positive impact as they serve others in their schools and communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels.  Volunteer opportunities are on Camp Zama and around Japan.

The ZMHS National Honor Society chapter is guided by four main principals: (1) "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, (2) to stimulate a desire to render service, (3) to promote leadership, and (4) to develop character in the students of secondary schools." Membership in the National Honor society has been earned by the effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by the Society: character, leadership, scholarship, and service. Invitations to apply for membership are sent to Sophomores and Juniors with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

Meets on: 3rd Wednesday of each month

The National Junior Honor Society chapter requires members to demonstrate exemplary character, leadership capabilities, and actively participate in both school and community service initiatives. Rising 7th and 8th grade students with a 3.5 GPA or better will be invited to apply in February after 1st semester grades are finalized. The application will require students to demonstrate the NJHS pillars through their commitment to leadership, service, and character. The applicants will submit teacher recommendations and the Faculty Council will score each anonymous application as part of the membership evaluation process. Students who are selected by the Faculty Council will be inducted at a formal ceremony.

ZMHS has a competitive girls fast-pitch softball team which competes in the spring against other DoDEA Pacific-East and Kanto Plains international schools.  Girls also have the opportunity to participate in Far East season championship finals.

ZMHS has both a Girls and a Boys tennis team.  Each competes against other Pacific-East DoDEA and International schools in the Kanto Plains (Japan) area. Tennis teams also participate in Far East and Kanto Plains tournaments near the end of the fall season.

ZMHS has a track and field team that participates in both individual and team events including sprints, hurdles, high-jump, long jump, shot put, and discus.  ZMHS track and field students compete against other Pacific-East DoDEA and Kanto Plains international schools.  At the end of the season, students have the opportunity to compete in the Far East championship meet.
